Meet the Doctors of Florida Brain & Spine Surgery Associates

Christopher S. Kent, M.D.

Dr. Kent has been prac­tic­ing med­i­cine as a board-cer­ti­fied neu­ro­sur­geon for more than 20 years. Before join­ing Flori­da Hos­pi­tal Memo­r­i­al Med­ical Cen­ter in June 2011, he was in pri­vate prac­tice in Lin­coln, Nebras­ka. He also served as staff neu­ro­sur­geon for the Naval Med­ical Cen­ter in San Diego from 1996–1999.

Dr. Kent earned his med­ical degree at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Rochester School of Med­i­cine and com­plet­ed his res­i­den­cy at S.U.N.Y. Health Sci­ence Cen­ter in Syra­cuse, New York. His exper­tise has made him an invit­ed lec­tur­er to the Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Surgery oral board review course, and he has also pub­lished works on spinal cord dis­eases and oth­er neu­ro­surgery top­ics.

Dr. Kent is a mem­ber of the Amer­i­can Board of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Surgery, Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Sur­geons and the Con­gress of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Sur­geons.


Robert J. Martin, M.D.

Dr. Mar­tin joined Flori­da Hos­pi­tal Memo­r­i­al Med­ical Cen­ter in 2007. Board-cer­ti­fied in neu­ro­log­i­cal surgery, he prac­ticed neu­ro­surgery at the Harbin Clin­ic Depart­ment of Neu­ro­science in Rome, Ga., for 10 years before join­ing Flori­da Hos­pi­tal Memo­r­i­al Med­ical Cen­ter.

Dr. Mar­tin is an accom­plished edu­ca­tor in neu­ro­surgery and ortho­pe­dic surgery, has pub­lished more than 15 med­ical arti­cles and has pre­sent­ed on a myr­i­ad of neu­ro­science top­ics at var­i­ous physi­cian asso­ci­a­tions. He served as asso­ciate pro­fes­sor of neu­ro­surgery and ortho­pe­dic surgery at S.U.N.Y.‘s Med­ical Cen­ter for five years, where he edu­cat­ed fel­low physi­cians through­out the coun­try and also in Cana­da, France and Aus­tria about clin­i­cal advances in neu­ro­surgery.

A grad­u­ate of S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook in New York, Dr. Mar­tin com­plet­ed his res­i­den­cy at the Depart­ment of Neu­ro­surgery S.U.N.Y. Health Sci­ence Cen­ter in Syra­cuse, N.Y., and com­plet­ed a fel­low­ship in spinal surgery at New York Uni­ver­si­ty Med­ical Cen­ter.

Dr. Mar­tin is a mem­ber of the Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Sur­geons and North Amer­i­can Spine Soci­ety.


D. Mark Murphy, M.D.

Dr.  Mur­phy has been prac­tic­ing neu­ro­surgery since 1985 and joined Flori­da Hos­pi­tal Memo­r­i­al Med­ical Cen­ter in 2007. Pri­or to his posi­tion at our hos­pi­tal, Dr. Mur­phy prac­ticed at Neu­ro­sur­gi­cal Asso­ciates, Coosa Med­ical Group and The Harbin Clin­ic, all in Geor­gia.

Board-cer­ti­fied in neu­ro­log­i­cal surgery, Dr. Mur­phy is a grad­u­ate of the Med­ical Col­lege of Vir­ginia in Rich­mond, Va., and com­plet­ed his res­i­den­cy at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Alaba­ma, Birm­ing­ham. He has pub­lished sev­er­al arti­cles on neu­ro­surgery in var­i­ous pro­fes­sion­al jour­nals.

Dr. Mur­phy is a Fel­low of the Amer­i­can Col­lege of Sur­geons and a mem­ber of the Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Sur­geons, Con­gress of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Sur­geons, South­ern Neu­ro­log­i­cal Soci­ety, Geor­gia Neu­ro­log­i­cal Soci­ety, Flori­da Neu­ro­log­i­cal Soci­ety and the J. Gar­ber Gal­braith Neu­ro­log­i­cal Soci­ety.


gregory-valatGregory Velat, M.D.

Dr. Velat is a board cer­ti­fied neu­ro sur­geon who joined Flori­da Hos­pi­tal Health­Care Part­ners in 2016. Pri­or to join­ing, he prac­ticed at Lee Memo­r­i­al Health Sys­tem in Fort Myers, FL with a focus on cere­brovas­cu­lar and neu­roin­t­er­ven­tion­al surgery.

He earned his med­ical degree from the Uni­ver­si­ty Of Flori­da Col­lege Of Med­i­cine and com­plet­ed his res­i­den­cy and fel­low­ship train­ing in Neu­roin­t­er­ven­tion­al Surgery at the Uni­ver­si­ty Of Flori­da as well. He com­plet­ed an addi­tion­al fel­low­ship in cere­brovas­cu­lar at the Bar­row Neu­ro­log­i­cal Insti­tute in Phoenix, Ari­zona. Dr. Velat has con­tributed to numer­ous pub­li­ca­tions and is the prin­ci­ple inves­ti­ga­tor for three intracra­nial stent­ing research stud­ies.

Dr. Velat is a mem­ber of the Amer­i­can Board of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Surgery, Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Sur­geons and the Con­gress of Neu­ro­log­i­cal Sur­geons.


adam-berginAdam Bergin, P.A.-C

Adam Bergin, P.A.-C, joined Flori­da Hos­pi­tal Memo­r­i­al Med­ical Cen­ter in August 2015 as the group’s physi­cian assis­tant. Adam works close­ly with Drs. Kent and Mar­tin to pro­vide a wide range of diag­nos­tic and ther­a­peu­tic ser­vices to neu­ro­surgery patients; includ­ing post-sur­gi­cal care and assist­ing the sur­geons in the oper­at­ing room.

Adam has exten­sive clin­i­cal expe­ri­ence in a vari­ety of med­ical spe­cial­ties, includ­ing neu­ro­surgery, gen­er­al surgery, fam­i­ly med­i­cine and emer­gency med­i­cine. He is licensed by the Flori­da State Med­ical Board and received his Mas­ters of Med­ical Sci­ence, physi­cian assis­tant degree from Nova South­east­ern Uni­ver­si­ty where he grad­u­at­ed with high­est hon­ors.


Salim Ghorayeb, P.A.-C

Sal­im Gho­rayeb, P.A.-C, joined Flori­da Hos­pi­tal Memo­r­i­al Med­ical Cen­ter in Novem­ber 2012 as the group’s physi­cian assis­tant. He works close­ly with Drs. Kent, Mar­tin and Mur­phy to pro­vide a wide range of diag­nos­tic and ther­a­peu­tic ser­vices to neu­ro­surgery patients, includ­ing post-sur­gi­cal patient’s vis­its to the office and assist­ing the sur­geons in the oper­at­ing room.

Sal­im has broad clin­i­cal expe­ri­ence in a vari­ety of med­ical spe­cial­ties, includ­ing neu­ro­surgery, emer­gency med­i­cine, gen­er­al surgery, fam­i­ly med­i­cine and phys­i­cal ther­a­py. He is licensed by the Flori­da State Med­ical Board and cer­ti­fied by the Nation­al Com­mis­sion on Cer­ti­fi­ca­tion of Physi­cians Assis­tants. He is also cer­ti­fied in basic, advanced car­diac and pedi­atric life sup­port. Sal­im received his Master’s of Med­ical Sci­ence, physi­cian assis­tant degree from Nova South­east­ern Uni­ver­si­ty in Orlan­do where he grad­u­at­ed with high­est hon­ors.
