Meet The Doctors

Christopher S. Kent, M.D.

Dr. Kent has been practicing medicine as a board-certified neurosurgeon for more than 20 years. Before joining Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in June 2011, he was in private practice in Lincoln, Nebraska. He also served as staff neurosurgeon for the Naval Medical Center in San Diego from 1996-1999.

Dr. Kent earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed his residency at S.U.N.Y. Health Science Center in Syracuse, New York. His expertise has made him an invited lecturer to the American Association of Neurological Surgery oral board review course, and he has also published works on spinal cord diseases and other neurosurgery topics.

Dr. Kent is a member of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.


Robert J. Martin, M.D.

Dr. Martin joined Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in 2007. Board-certified in neurological surgery, he practiced neurosurgery at the Harbin Clinic Department of Neuroscience in Rome, Ga., for 10 years before joining Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. Martin is an accomplished educator in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, has published more than 15 medical articles and has presented on a myriad of neuroscience topics at various physician associations. He served as associate professor of neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery at S.U.N.Y.’s Medical Center for five years, where he educated fellow physicians throughout the country and also in Canada, France and Austria about clinical advances in neurosurgery.

A graduate of S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook in New York, Dr. Martin completed his residency at the Department of Neurosurgery S.U.N.Y. Health Science Center in Syracuse, N.Y., and completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at New York University Medical Center.

Dr. Martin is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and North American Spine Society.


D. Mark Murphy, M.D.

Dr.  Murphy has been practicing neurosurgery since 1985 and joined Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in 2007. Prior to his position at our hospital, Dr. Murphy practiced at Neurosurgical Associates, Coosa Medical Group and The Harbin Clinic, all in Georgia.

Board-certified in neurological surgery, Dr. Murphy is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va., and completed his residency at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He has published several articles on neurosurgery in various professional journals.

Dr. Murphy is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Southern Neurological Society, Georgia Neurological Society, Florida Neurological Society and the J. Garber Galbraith Neurological Society.


gregory-valatGregory Velat, M.D.

Dr. Velat is a board certified neuro surgeon who joined Florida Hospital HealthCare Partners in 2016. Prior to joining, he practiced at Lee Memorial Health System in Fort Myers, FL with a focus on cerebrovascular and neurointerventional surgery.

He earned his medical degree from the University Of Florida College Of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship training in Neurointerventional Surgery at the University Of Florida as well. He completed an additional fellowship in cerebrovascular at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Velat has contributed to numerous publications and is the principle investigator for three intracranial stenting research studies.

Dr. Velat is a member of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.


adam-berginAdam Bergin, P.A.-C

Adam Bergin, P.A.-C, joined Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in August 2015 as the group’s physician assistant. Adam works closely with Drs. Kent and Martin to provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services to neurosurgery patients; including post-surgical care and assisting the surgeons in the operating room.

Adam has extensive clinical experience in a variety of medical specialties, including neurosurgery, general surgery, family medicine and emergency medicine. He is licensed by the Florida State Medical Board and received his Masters of Medical Science, physician assistant degree from Nova Southeastern University where he graduated with highest honors.


Salim Ghorayeb, P.A.-C

Salim Ghorayeb, P.A.-C, joined Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in November 2012 as the group’s physician assistant. He works closely with Drs. Kent, Martin and Murphy to provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services to neurosurgery patients, including post-surgical patient’s visits to the office and assisting the surgeons in the operating room.

Salim has broad clinical experience in a variety of medical specialties, including neurosurgery, emergency medicine, general surgery, family medicine and physical therapy. He is licensed by the Florida State Medical Board and certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants. He is also certified in basic, advanced cardiac and pediatric life support. Salim received his Master’s of Medical Science, physician assistant degree from Nova Southeastern University in Orlando where he graduated with highest honors.
